Orientation camp 2018

Orientation 2018 was amazing, This camp taught me many skills and values. I was given the opportunity to plan this camp and lead as the Chairman. My team and I worked extremely hard to plan and execute this camp in school, and to ensure that the newly invested scouts get to experience different elements of scouting in an enjoyable and safe way. I initially struggled to find out how to conduct a camp or even plan one, with no clue at all, I sought help from my leaders and gathered all the available resources so that I could attain success in meeting the objectives of the camp. Over the three days in the camp, The scouts managed to learn many different and new things such as Stove cooking, importance of a fire drill, outdoor exploration, procedure of the investiture and many other important scouting skills and knowledge. The first few days were tough as there were a few hiccups in pitching up the tent which caused a time delay. However after those incidents, on the subsequent days we picked up or game and corrected all our mistakes. To achieve this i kept telling myself that as a venture planning and executing this camp i have to think from the perspective of a planner and not a participant. Throughout my Scouting journey, I have never planned an event this big, but there is a beginning for everything. One of the scouts David Tan even mentioned, "I feel very happy about the camp as the ventures planned the camp very well and I truly had fun .I have learnt that everything we do has a time limit and in the camp every time we don’t meet a time limit there will be consequences and sometimes the consequences will be dire so I have learnt to try my best to hit any time limit set by anyone..".

Asvind
What went well:
It was a fun and memorable experience and thought us to appreciate our seniors
What went wrong:
The first day was rough but since it was our first time we had to adapt
What can be improved:
The management of tents because some of the sec ones had to sleep with other patrols
Feelings and Lessons:
It was a fun experience except the first day cause they expected a lot from the sec ones but other than that it was one of the most fun camp I have been to

Alvis
What went well:
My patrol manage to cook a good meal within the time limit. Job week allowed us to have to earnings. Investiture
What went wrong:
My patrol wasn’t pitch the tents well, as well as the condition of the tent was bad. Some of the games in wet activity are not fun
What can be improved:
Give a example on how to lay out our things for inspection
Feelings and lessons:
Get bond with batch mates and seniors

Jared
What went well:
The planning of the camp was very good, we managed to bond with sec 1s and a little bit more with our own batch mates, games were enjoyable and it was a great experience.

What went wrong:
We were not able to interact and bond with our sec 3s very often as they were in a different camp. This takes away the opportunity for the sec ones to bond with the sec 3s.

What can be improved for camp :
The food can be better(i know it's not in your control), we should at least be allowed to eat with the sec 3s during meals.
Bellamy Kwan

Dominic Tey
What went well:
-The Sec 2s tried to coordinate, so that everyone including the sec 1s helped.
-Sec 1s were more alert and responsive.
What went wrong:
-There wasn’t space for the sec 3s to sleep in the tent.
-Some sec 1s were talking among themselves when the sec 2s and some sec 1s were building the tents.
What can be improved:
-More tents for sec 3s
-Coordination among the sec 2s, some ppl were arguing when they couldnt agree on 1 thing.
Feelings and lessons:
-Well planned and executed
-Good experience with sec 1s

Spencer Looi
What went well:
Most Sec 2s Stepped up
and performed significantly better than at normal trainings, the camp also instilled the sec 2s with values such as responsibility and care. The camp was overall fun and well planned and the amount of time given to complete each activity was reasonable. The sec 1s also grew I’m ways such as being independent.
What went wrong:
Nothing much went wrong except some people not doing much and slacking throughout the camp.
What can be improved.
Better Management of tents
As the amount of tents were not enough to house everyone.
Thoughts and feelings:
The camp was challenging and pushed me to do better to meet what was expected of us. The activities were also fun, memorable and I learnt many things from it.

Catfish Patrol

Aide Mikhail
What went well:
I think setting up the tents and the cooking of the spaghetti went well. I also think that the wet activities and the PT went smoothly. I think PT ent well and also the activities like archery tag. Job Week.
What went wrong:
I think that during inspection, we took too long to lay out our items. We took too long to gather and took our time when doing something.
What can be improved:
I think the food could be better.

Lucas Tai
What went well:
Everything
What went wrong:
Nothing
What can be improved:
The food

Ignatius

Gabriel Quek
What went well during the camp:
The camp went quite well, except that sleeping conditions were very cramped.
What went wrong:
We did not coordinate during the inspection so some layouts were different.

What went wrong during the camp:
The food didn’t taste very good.

What went well:
I had bonded with my patrol alot. The food was better than other camps. I had plenty of sleep and time to shower. I also had developed a sense of urgency.
What went wrong:
We were very late in our timings and did not wait for our juniors when we got timings.
What can be improved:
Nothing. But i can improve myself in my leadership and sense of urgency.

Vanness Wong
Day One
What went well: We managed to pitch the tents and do the cooking as a patrol
What went wrong: the time taken to pitch the tents took too long
What can be improved: the time taken to pitch the tents should be shorter

Lian Ying
What went well:
I fell that the inspection went well for the first day as it was the sec 1’s first time. The wet games as I feel that some of us were very participative and i feel that we all had a lot of fun. For Job Week, I feel that it went well as we could interact with people that we have never seen before. For the investiture all of us were very good in getting the hang of the rehearsals so we did it very quickly. I think that the jobs went well as we did not get into trouble and did our jobs well and our donations
What went wrong:
when we were doing the setting up of camps some people were walking around the campsite wondering what they were going to do and did not help with the setting up of the tents. We were doing our urban hike and our job Week. We did not do any jobs. When we were doing our urban hike our patrol did not do it in time as we forgot about halfway through our hike and we got lectured by our ventures. There were also not enough water balloons.
What could be improved:
Feelings and lessons: I think that the jobs went well as we did not get into trouble and did our jobs well and our donations. Fom hearing the last camp from the sec 2s i think the camp has improved by a huge step. I have learnt that this camp bonds all the scouts together as i lost some of my stuff but the sec 2s help me find it

What can be improved:our sense of urgency

Day 2
What went well:We did our water
Games and we had a lot of fun we also kept to the time schedule.

Scouts is a good activity because you get to learn a lot about surviving like pitching a tent. Scouts also do charity works. Therefore it is a good Uniform Group to join.

Q1.Collect 3 different types of leaves and describe its characteristics.

The first leaf has smooth edges, and it is somewhat oval in shape, also its veins is clearly seen, also it has small dark patches on the underside of the leaf.

The second leaf is longer than the first leaf I have described and also it has a pink stem. Its veins is no longer obvious, in fact it cannot be seen with our naked eye.The leaf also has smooth edges and it has a lighter shade of green on the underside than the first leaf.

The third leaf is a tiny branch of leaves, its leaves are tiny such that one branch has about 10 leaves on it, it is about the size of half of our pinky, the leaves have smooth edges too.
Pictures of leaves(leaves are arranged in order)
First leaf

Second leaf
Third leaf

Q2.Take a picture with a stranger and ask him/her what he or she feels about scouts.
The stranger feels that scouts is good and kind-hearted,and that scouts as a CCA helps build up leadership.
Q3. Record at least 5 signs as you do your job week.
1. A stop sign
2.Pedestrian crossing sign.
3.A Speed limit sign( 15 km/h)
4.A height limit sign(4.5m)
5.No walking within the bus park sign.

Pictures of the road signs
Q4.Write down a significant place and explain why it is significant.
A temple at Sing Ming Avenue. It is a significant place because it is a place where people pray to god and give their offerings to their ancestors. It is a place where they can have some quiet time to reflect on what they have done, and pray to god for well wishes.

Picture of the monastery/temple

5.Sketch of the temple

Eden Lam

Activity one: Collect 3 types of leaves and record observations.
1. I can observe that this leaf is much darker in coloration than the other two leaves with a distinct dark green color, and also has more of a shine than the others.

2. I can observe that this leaf is particularly small, with smaller sections poking out of the stem. It has a triangular shape.

3. I can observe that this leaf is bigger than the rest, and it’s coloration is much brighter than the other two with a distinct light green color. The veins are also quite obvious and can be seen slanting upwards from the base.

Activity 2: Take a photo with a stranger and ask what he or she thinks about Scouts.

What do you think about Scouts?

Activity 3: Record down a significant place, and state why.
A temple. It looks significant as out of all the tall buildings, the temple is low-lying and has a very artistic look to it with its scaled roofs and unique coloration.

Activity 4: Do a sketch of the place, take in consideration the ratio of the amount of nature to man-made structure.

The Temple is built upon grass, bushes and trees, so the ratio of nature to man-made structure would be 2:1.

Activity 5: Look out for signs and/or highway codes. Take down at least 5.
1. Zebra crossing
2. Maximum speed
3. Stop and give way
4. No jaywalking in the bus park
5. No vehicles over height shown
