Service Project - Food Distribution

Photo

My friend Bryan and I decided to tackle the service project component by firstly, finding out the needs of the community. We did so by conducting surveys about the challenges each resident at Braddell Heights, a residential area next to our school. We drafted out questions like 'What are your needs in this community?' and what we as scouts can do for you. As Bryan and I gathered all these information from the residents we were shocked to find out that the residents that were living there were not well to do and required more food rations and needed to fix certain problems like the cleanliness of the area. One resident even complained about the bad smell coming from the staircase. We collected this information and did a feedback to the Chairman of the residential area, Mr. Raja. After that Bryan and I made arrangements for more food rations. And then on another day, we came down to the estate to distribute out the food items such as rice, cooking oil.

When we did the distribution we were extremely happy to see that the residents were very happy to see us, and they showered us with love by constantly saying thank you. Through this service project, I learned how to draft out surveys to understand the needs of the community better. The three stages in which we carried out this component involved, Firstly the planning and preparation of survey questions. Secondly, the visiting of homes in the block to ask the questions, and collecting the data for further research. And lastly, the distribution of food items and feedbacking major problems to the town council, hence aiding the residents there and helping them to live a better stress-free life.

Through this whole activity, I have learned that nothing is to be taken for granted and that it is our duty as Singaporeans to help and fix these problems by helping one another and standing hand in hand, building a better country.
